Weber’s 1821 opera ‘Der Freischutz’ is a classic of German romanticism and is set in a world of dark, mysterious forests full of supernatural possibilities. Its title is usually translated as ‘The Marksman’ and its central character is a hunter. We drew on these themes to create a suite of publicity materials.
To capture the elemental world of German forests we used dramatic black and white photography of misty woodland and flowing rivers by landscape specialist Pete Defty. These contrasted with a sharp fluorescent green. We also created flyers on a range of earthy organic paper stocks, which we then punctured with a real shotgun from 30 yards away.
